Thu, 08 May 2025 16:45:44 -0400 https://www.disneytravelagents.com/news/11743 https://www.disneytravelagents.com/news/11743 (Disney Destinations) Disney Destinations This May, as we celebrate both Travel Advisor Appreciation Month and National Military Appreciation Month, Disney Destinations is proud to salute travel professionals who have served in the United States Armed Forces or support the military community through their work in the travel industry.

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on some of these inspiring individuals, showcasing their incredible contributions to the military and their dedication to helping to create unforgettable vacation memories. We’re proud to celebrate their service to our country, their ongoing commitment to the military community and their passion for helping make vacation dreams come true!

David Lamb, Director of Tickets & Travel, MacDill Air Force Base

David Lamb is a third-generation military veteran whose 22-year career with the U.S. Air Force took him around the world. From building tent cities to supporting service members through Moral, Welfare and Recreation programs, David’s military experience cultivated a passion for service and connection. Today, he brings that same spirit to his current role, training his team not just to sell tickets, but to create unforgettable experiences.

Born into a military family, David’s father was once stationed at McCoy Air Force Base which is now Orlando International Airport. As a child, they lived “down the road” from Walt Disney World Resort. One of his earliest memories is waiting up all night for his family’s first trip to the Magic Kingdom in 1971. Through the years he has continued to share that same magic with his sons and now his grandchildren. David says, “It’s funny how life can make a full circle back to your beginning.”

Whether in uniform or behind a travel desk, David’s mission remains the same – to serve with heart and help others create lasting memories.

Kathy Geiger, Travel Advisor, MEI Travel

Kathy Geiger proudly served for four years in the U.S. Marine Corps where the discipline she learned laid the foundation for the strong work ethic and pride that guides her work today as a travel advisor. Though she no longer works directly with the military, she continues to support her local military community and works with many retired service members as clients.

One of her fondest Disney memories comes from her time stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro in California – not far from the Disneyland Resort. Kathy recalls being able to watch the fireworks at Disneyland Park from the softball field bleachers on the base. “I always felt a level of comfort knowing my favorite park was so close,” she says. Today that magic lives on as she relives the wonder of Disney through the eyes of her grandchildren during frequent visits to the Disneyland Resort.

Mark Kechula, Luxury Travel Advisor, Hi Ho Vacations

Mark Kechula served an impressive 30-years with the U.S. Navy, rising from junior enlisted ranks to Chief Warrant Officer in the Aviation Maintenance Community. His service spanned deployments aboard aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf. The Navy’s core values – Honor, Courage and Commitment – continue to shape his work today as a Luxury Travel Advisor with Hi Ho Vacations, where he’s spent over 12 years helping to deliver unforgettable travel experiences.

Mark credits his military background for the skills that now guide success – strategic planning, clear communication and a deep sense of responsibility. He is particularly proud of helping families plan Disney Cruise Line vacations. “Following an established process and curating a vacation from start-to-finish aligns with my military missions,” Mark shares. He says the feedback he receives from his clients motivates him to continue pursuing his dream occupation. For Mark, serving others – whether through the military or magical getaways – is a lifelong calling.

Ricky Sesco, Air Force Information, Tickets and Travel Program Manager

Ricky Sesco proudly served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years beginning as a Construction Heavy Equipment Operator before working as a Production Control Specialist. Most of his career was spent in Germany, with additional assignments in California and Texas. Since retiring from active duty, Ricky has continued to serve the military community at the Air Forces Services Center as the Air Force Information, Tickets and Travel Program Manager – a role he has held for nearly 25 years.

Ricky credits his military background with giving him a unique perspective on the needs of service members and their families, making him a trusted resource for both military personnel and industry partners. Overall, Ricky says his Air Force career has made him who he is and given him lifelong friends and adopted families. In addition, he says his longstanding collaboration with the Disney Military Sales Team has given him the chance to experience a lot of magic across our Disney Destinations. Ricky shares, “My 24 years have been very rewarding mainly due to Disney.”

Ruthann Szente, Travel Advisor, MEI Travel

As a dedicated travel advisor and a proud military spouse of an Air National Guard pilot, Ruthann Szente has learned how to adapt under pressure. From navigating last-minute plans to embracing time apart, she deeply understands the importance of making the most of family time, especially after long deployments.

Ruthann says her family’s Disney trips have given them something to look forward to when her husband returns from deployment or extended training away from home. She brings that insight and her own personal Disney experiences to every itinerary she plans for her clients. Ruthann shares, “We are definitely a Disney family – both parks and cruises. My favorite memories are seeing my kids meet their favorite characters for the first time.”

Anne Rodriguez, Information Tickets and Tours Manager, Marine Corps Community Services, Camp Pendleton

Anne Rodriguez began her career in service to the military community as a civilian employee at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, later transferring to Camp Pendleton. Starting in the accounting office, she quickly advanced to become the Information Tickets and Tours Manager with Marine Corps Community Services, a role focused on enhancing the quality of life for Marines and their families.

Driven by deep pride of her country and a strong family legacy of military service, Anne chose a civilian path that allowed her to support the mission of the Marine Corps in impactful ways. Through her years of service, she has developed essential skills that she uses to lead her team and provide exceptional service to her military clients. For Anne, serving the military community isn’t just a career – it’s a lifelong source of purpose, pride and connection. She says, “Serving as a civilian employee for the military has given me an opportunity to serve a military community that I am deeply grateful for.”

Veronica Barrientos, Disney Military Ticket Seller, USAF Travis Air Force Base

Veronica Barrientos proudly supported the military community as a spouse for 21 years and continues that service today as a Disney Military Ticket Seller in the Information Tickets and Tours office at USAF Travis Air Force Base. Her firsthand experience as a military spouse gives her a unique insight as she helps fellow military families plan unforgettable vacations.

For Veronica, being part of the military community has given her lifelong friendships, meaningful challenges and cherished memories. One of her most treasured moments was reuniting with her husband and sons at the Disneyland Resort in 2024 after several years apart. It was an experience that perfectly captured the joy and togetherness she now helps other families create every day.

Tue, 06 May 2025 09:28:57 -0400 https://www.disneytravelagents.com/news/11742 https://www.disneytravelagents.com/news/11742 (Disney Destinations) Disney Destinations It’s time to raise a glass and let out a hearty shout – The Beak and Barrel opens later this year in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom Park! Established by the legendary pirate rumrunner, Captain Meridian “Merry” Goldwyn, and her talkative first mate, Rummy (more on them below), this lively pirate pub will soon welcome swashbucklers, scoundrels, bandits and buccaneers of all ages from every corner of the seven seas.

Meet Rummy

As Merry’s trusted companion and first mate, Rummy serves as the tavern’s quartermaster keeping an eye on the place from his roost high atop the bar. Although retired from seafaring life, Rummy is a dutiful crewman to his beloved Merry, ensuring everything is ship-shape, sharing tales of piracy and leading the bar in a rousing toast or two.

Eagle-eyed Disney fans may notice that Rummy bears a striking resemblance to the original Barker Bird that previously sat at the entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean but flew the coop some time ago.

The Mess

The largest and central space at The Beak and Barrel was once the mess hall for Spanish soldiers and is now known appropriately as “The Mess.” Long tables span the room, allowing for pirates to gather ‘round and tell their own tales, while an imposing anchor covered in candles and dripping wax hangs high above.

A large bar anchors one side of the room, cobbled together from salvaged portions of a cursed shipwreck. At its center, the skull-shaped stern holds an impressive collection of grogs and brew. Guests may also spot the Enchanted Rum Bottle, which was gifted to Merry by the enchantress Tia Dalma and seemingly serves as the source of the tavern’s specialty brews, or Rummy hobbling along the bar’s ledge, greeting the patrons and keeping a close eye on the crew while Merry is away.

Captains’ Quarters

Inside the Captains’ Quarters, visiting pirates can enjoy a taste of the finer life, which was once the living quarters of the Spanish Comandante. However, the fine artwork and drapery hasn’t escaped slashing blades or burn marks over the years by rambunctious pirates, and in some places, faded spots on the wall are all that remains of now plundered portraits.

Above the fireplace are mounted five miniature ships in glass bottles, rumored to represent pirates from every corner of the world banding together to defeat tyranny. Keep a weathered eye out, as these mysterious bottles have been known to come alive and engage in a fearsome battle.

There’s still plenty more to be discovered inside The Beak and Barrel, but that’s enough for today. Be sure to stay tuned for more details, including the opening date and a first look at some of the sea-worthy selection of drinks and bites fit for pirates of all ages coming soon. It’s a pirate’s life for us!

For so many guests, it’s a rite of passage to head through the entry gates of Disneyland park for the first time, allowing them to enter a world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy in a truly unforgettable moment that they will always remember.

Yet the next step once passing through those gates is up to them as they enter this ultimate family destination, whether they are looking to board a classic attraction like Haunted Mansion, snack on a legendary Disney treat or pose for a picture in front of an iconic location like Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Whether Southern California locals, visiting from out-of-town or staying at one of the three Hotels of the Disneyland Resort, we know guests can’t wait to enter the parks as quickly as possible.

For guests wondering about the easiest ways to enter The Happiest Place on Earth, we’ve got plenty of answers about the upgrades to the entry gates at the entrances for Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure park.

Where Can I Find the Entry Turnstiles at the Resort?

Located at the main entrance to both Disneyland and California Adventure, guests can enter the parks through the esplanade located between both theme parks. They have seen turnstiles located at these entry points over the years but will be delighted to see modernized new entry gates.

Pro Tip: Select guests with valid theme park admission can also skip the main entrances by entering at three other locations:

  • Aboard the Disneyland Monorail via Downtown Disney District station: Guests with a valid park admission or Magic Key pass and reservation to Disneyland park can travel straight to Tomorrowland on this highway in the sky.
  • Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa: Hotel guests at the Disneyland Resort can soon discover Disney California Adventure by entering the park near Grizzly Peak with a valid park admission or Magic Key pass and reservation to Disney California Adventure park.
  • Near Pixar Place Hotel: 30 minutes prior to park opening until 12 p.m. PST, hotel guests at the Disneyland Resort can enter Disney California Adventure by entering the park near Goofy’s Sky School with a valid park admission or Magic Key pass and reservation to Disney California Adventure park.

How Do I Use the New Entry Gates at Disneyland?

Once they are ready to start the fun, guests can head over to the entrance gate of your choice. Every gate is ADA compliant, allowing all guests with ECVs, wheelchairs and strollers to use and pass through them with ease!

  • Step 1: To enter each park, guests will scan each ticket using screens present at individual entry gates.
  • Step 2: Once each ticket is scanned, every guest in the group will then use the screen to take their own picture by pressing the camera icon on the screen to capture their photo. And don’t worry about the kids: each entry gate is equipped with camera technology that will automatically adjust to each guest’s height while snapping the photo!
  • Step 3: Once each ticket is scanned and the photo is digitally attached to guests' tickets, the entry gates will automatically swing open for their party to head into the park together.

What is the Entry Process Like?

Many guests want to kick off their early morning at the resort by quickly scanning their tickets at the entrance gates so they can pick up their food and beverages they mobile ordered from Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe or head toward a popular attraction like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance.

At each entrance gate, guests will be able to scan their tickets and take their own pictures to attach to their tickets. If they have a multi-day ticket or a Magic Key pass, they will only have to take your picture linked to your ticket one time, making this process smooth for returning guests!

While this new process allows guests to scan their tickets by themselves, a nearby cast member will also be there to help so guests can get to their next ride or make your lunch reservation in time.

What is New About This Entry Experience?

These updates at the entryways to Disneyland and California Adventure aim to improve the arrival experience with even more gates than before.

While a cast member will still be present at the park entrances to validate tickets and photos and welcome guests to the resort, newly accessible gates will open automatically after guests scan their ticket and take a photo, including for guests with ECVs, wheelchairs and strollers.

The updated entry gates will also have an access point to tap guests' MagicBand+, allowing for easy and hands-free access.

How Does My Toddler Enter the Parks?

All guests under the age of 3 do not need a valid admission ticket or theme park reservation to enter either park, though all guests ages 3 years old and above must have both. Guests over the age of 3 will follow the same process of scanning and capturing a photo when entering, with an adult’s help of course!

And there’s plenty to do with little onse at both theme parks once passing through the entry gates – guests can hop on a kid-friendly ride like Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway in Mickey’s Toontown, catch “Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!” when it debuts on May 16 or dance and play at the Fantasyland Theatre with Pixar Pals Playtime Party when it returns for a limited time beginning May 23!

Can I Use the Disneyland App or MagicBand+ to Enter?

Of course! Once guests purchase their tickets and made theme park reservations, they can open the Disneyland app* and select the menu (the three horizontal lines in the bottom right of the navigation bar).

Then, once tapping “My Tickets and Passes” loading tickets to the app by selecting “Link Tickets & Passes,” they will be all set to head toward the entry gates to scan their tickets and enter the park. Guests can use the Disneyland app or tap your MagicBand+ to the access points to enter!

With additional planning tools, exclusive content and park updates including ride wait times and showtimes, the Disneyland app is everyone's new best friend when visiting the resort over the course of their stay.

Are There Any Disney-Inspired Features?

There are! Each entry gate features animated clips of beloved characters welcoming and eventually bidding farewell to guests upon entering and exiting, with Mickey Mouse at Disneyland and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit at California Adventure!

How Do I Re-Enter the Parks?

Later this summer, get ready for a star-kissed constellation of Disney wishes as “Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away” comes to life with beloved characters from “Encanto,” “Frozen,” “Coco” and more. Stay tuned for more details.

Extra Perks When Staying in the Magic

Make a splash right from the start. Guests of Disney Resort Collection hotels can enjoy free admission to one of our two water parks on the day of their check-in for free.

As a reminder, both Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach will be open this summer starting on May 21.

Guests of Disney Resort hotels and other select hotels can also enjoy 30 minutes of early theme park entry every day of their stay. Guests might even spot some of their favorite characters out in the park during this time.

And that’s just the beginning of the fun. Staying at Disney’s Pop Century Resort, Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge means extra fun for the entire family.

There, guests can enjoy even more Disney-themed activities, including character visits with set appearance times to help guests plan their day and an expanded itinerary of things to do with your family throughout your stay at these four resorts.
