California Skies to World Horizons: The Evolution of Soarin’ at Disneyland Resort Now, as your clients next flight prepares for takeoff with Soarin’ Across America debuting at Disneyland Resort on July 2, learn how this groundbreaking, fan-favorite attraction first took flight and how it continues to reach new heights.

Mon, 06 Jul 2026 12:40:12 -0400 https://www.disneytravelagents.com/news/12232 https://www.disneytravelagents.com/news/12232 (Disney Destinations) Disney Destinations

For decades, Disney Parks have found a way to show what it feels like to truly take flight.

The gentle lift into the sky aboard Dumbo the Flying Elephant. The rush of flying over London on the way to Never Land on Peter Pan’s Flight. Even the jump to lightspeed on Star Tours – The Adventures Continue or the twists and turns on Goofy’s Sky School, all moments that have been a part of the story of the Disneyland Resort over the years.

When Soarin’ Over California debuted at Disney California Adventure Park, that familiar feeling returned on an entirely new scale, lifting guests higher than ever before and presenting a stunning perspective of the Golden State below.

Now, as your clients next flight prepares for takeoff with Soarin’ Across America debuting at Disneyland Resort on July 2, learn how this groundbreaking, fan-favorite attraction first took flight and how it continues to reach new heights.

Exploring the Golden State on Soarin’ Over California

Opening as part of the monumental debut of Disney California Adventure Park in 2001, Soarin’ Over California allowed guests to live out their dreams of flight.

Taking guests on an exhilarating airborne adventure with high-flying vistas of California, flyers were first introduced to inspirational stories of aviation heroes and legends before boarding a state-of-the-art flying machine that perfectly captured the joy of hang gliding, accompanied by some important safety information from the chief flight attendant, Patrick.

Yet before the attraction was ready for takeoff, one major challenge for Disney Imagineers was to devise a practical way to place an audience of 80+ guests into the middle of an 80-foot-high domed screen, which became an outstanding task for rideengineer Mark Sumner. Hungry for ideas while the ride was being developed, Sumner went into his attic and pulled out a dusty Erector set, complete with toy-size nuts, bolts, girders, pulleys, and hand cranks.

Over several days, Sumner worked relentlessly to put together a working model. And in a spirited fashion, Sumner was ready with his model, rolling a carriage forward, up, and out toward a screen in a “lift-and-glide” type of ride system that would eventually become a signature element of the attraction.

San Fran to Disneyland: Soarin’ Over California Destinations

The push through the clouds to reveal the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Napa Valley vineyards, with the sky populated by hot air balloons searching for picturesque views of the surrounding area. The stunning shores of Malibu at sunset, with surfers looking for one last wave. Even PGA West at La Quinta in the Palm Desert, with a powerful drive and a golf ball hurling straight toward the screen.

These Golden State destinations have long been beloved by flyers since the attraction debuted on February 8, 2001, featuring signature scents and Jerry Goldsmith’s original attraction score.

On an aerial journey from NorCal to SoCal, beginning early in the morning and progressing through the day to nightfall, guests hit up iconic locations like Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, the skiing and snowboarding slopes of Lake Tahoe in winter, or the rugged coastline of Point Lobos in Monterey. Guests also zip through downtown Los Angeles at nighttime, passing by towering buildings, near the once-titled Staples Center, and of course, over the easy-to-navigate and never-crowded 110 freeway.

Soarin’ Over California Fun Fact: Before filming the scene where horses and their riders gallop through Anza Borrego State Park, the film crew hired an archaeologist and a team to perform a biological and paleontological resource assessment of the area. In a corresponding move that would’ve made Indiana Jones proud, the team hand-dusted the area from Fonts Wash to Fonts Point (a nearly four-mile stretch of trail) to make sure no artifacts would be disturbed, which can be seen on film!

In the same Anza Borrego scene, the iconic Thunderbirds take center stage, stunning guests with sheer speed and precision.

At the time, Lt. Col. Brian Bishop was the lead pilot of the Thunderbirds, an inspiring title that earned him the code name “Be-Bop.” Lead pilots of the Thunderbirds may only hold their position for no more than three years, and during the time of filming, Bishop’s time was winding down as the lead pilot of the esteemed air demonstration squadron.

Yet in a touching curtain call that truly marked a storybook ending that a hopeful pilot can only dream of, “Be-Bop” was able to participate in the filming of this sequence that constituted his final flight as commander of the Thunderbirds, helping to polish his own aerial legacy and cementing his everlasting piece in Disney Parks history. It’s a touching tribute that perfectly encapsulates the magic of this attraction, reminding fans why Soarin’ remains a cornerstone favorite for so many guests traveling from around the world.

Navigating the Globe on Soarin’ Around the World

In the summer of 2016, Soarin’ Around the World debuted at California Adventure, taking eager aviators beyond the Golden State and around the world to visit iconic landmarks and some of the world’s most famous man-made wonders. The updated film swapped California destinations for a global itinerary, soaring past well-known destinations like the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower, and even the icy peaks of the Matterhorn.

Soarin’ Around the World Fun Fact: While filming the Matterhorn sequence, the camera used by the crew froze solid in the extreme conditions, delaying production for nearly two hours while it thawed.

The experience features sweeping new aerial footage and updated scents that brought each location into a sharp focus from scene to scene. Additionally, composer Bruce Broughton faithfully adapted an updated version of Jerry Goldsmith’s original score for the new show with the inclusion of regional instruments, recorded alongside the London Symphony Orchestra at the legendary Abbey Road studios in London.

What once started as a tribute to the nature and beauty of California’s landscape became a global journey, reflecting the attraction’s growing presence in Disney Parks around the world and offering guests the chance to circle the world in a single flight.

Soarin’ Around the World Destinations:

  • The Matterhorn (Swiss Alps)
  • Greenland
  • Sydney Harbour (Australia)
  • Neuschwanstein Castle (Germany)
  • Mount Kilimanjaro
  • The Great Wall of China
  • The Great Pyramids of Egypt
  • Taj Mahal (India)
  • Monument Valley (United States of America)
  • Lau Island (Fiji)
  • Iguaza Falls
  • Eiffel Tower (France)
  • Disneyland Resort (United States of America)

Still, even as the journey expanded beyond California, the heart of the attraction remained intact, lifting guests into the air, gliding in formation, and delivering the same sense of scale and movement that has defined Soarin’ since its first day at Disneyland Resort.

Looking Toward Soarin’ Across America at California Adventure

Soarin’ to tower: we are ready for takeoff.

And now, Soarin’ Across America showcases a tapestry of the United States from sea to shining sea, highlighting some of the country’s natural landscapes, iconic skylines, and well-known landmarks. The Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore are a few of the locations highlighted honoring the spirit of the nation as it celebrates its 250th anniversary.

Once inside, guets will still find the Wings of Fame and Legends of Flight exhibit areas, paying tribute to some of the great airplanes designed and built in California, as well as 20 of the greatest dreamers and doers of California aviation. With larger-than-life photos on display, the names of legendary aviators like Earhart, Yeager, Banning, Lockheed, Hughes, and more continue to line the walls, showcasing those who dared to push the limits of aviation science and shape the future of flight with a soaring spirit and daredevil glint in their eyes.

Once guests have stored all their carry-on items in the under-seat compartment and the final systems check has been conducted, they will lift into the air and glide across the country, from the rugged New England coastline to the vast expanse of Grand Canyon West to an iconic shot of New York Harbor that will probably be top of mind for the rest of your clients' trip.

Along the way, guests pass by the great plains of the west, the northern wilderness, sunlit island shores, and the beauty of the bayou on their cross-country journey, placing them into the diverse landscapes that define the United States.

Soarin’ Across America Fun Fact: The production team traveled more than 28,000 miles. Nearly 900 helicopter passes in total contributed to the production, as well as more than 60 drone passes.

As Soarin’ Across America takes flight at Disney California Adventure at Disneyland Resort and EPCOT at Walt Disney World Resort, it marks the next chapter for an attraction that has continued to evolve, while also holding onto its original idea of providing guests with a new perspective on the world below. From its opening day journey over California to a coast-to-coast flight across the United States of America, Soarin’ continues to invite guests to reimagine what it means to take off on an adventure filled with joy, excitement, and an appreciation for nature, while always returning to the same simple feeling of what it truly feels like to fly.

Plans are underway to bring these all-new restaurants to Downtown Disney in the future!

  • Earl of Sandwich will have a new, two-story location in Downtown Disney District, with a quick-service Earl of Sandwich shop on the ground level and The Carnaby Tavern, an all-new table-service gastropub upstairs designed as an homage to the ‘60s “British Invasion” pop and rock bands from the U.K.

Arthur & Sons Steak and Bourbon, from Michelin-starred Chef Joe Isidori, will be a classic steakhouse serving up prime cuts of beef, fresh seafood, sandwiches and salads, and an impressive selection of bourbon and cocktails with a lively center bar.

  • Construction is underway to bring Porto’s Bakery & Cafe, an iconic Southern California destination known for its sweet pastries as well as California-Cuban-inspired dishes, to Downtown Disney. Foodies can look forward to picking up their signature Cheese Rolls, Potato Balls and other favorite goodies from the bakery and cafe, plus this new location will be the first Porto’s with sit-down table service and a full bar. Check out concept art of this exciting addition coming to Downtown Disney, depicting the outdoor patio, striking exterior, and cozy dining space.

Throughout the year, keep a look out for new specialty menu items, unique shopping experiences, and seasonal entertainment and decor across the district.

Admission to Downtown Disney is complimentary. If guests are heading to Disneyland Park with a valid park admission, they may board the Disneyland Monorail at the Downtown Disney station and enjoy an approximate 13-minute ride around the resort before arriving in Tomorrowland.

We’ll see you at Downtown Disney!
