A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow: The Ever-Changing Carousel of Progress There’s a great big, beautiful tomorrow on the way for Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. For the last 60 years, this passion project of Walt himself has served as a powerful reflection of optimism, innovation, and family over time. In addition to adding Walt Disney to the very attraction that bears his name, Imagineers will also be updating all the scenes to new time periods, where we’ll get to see what John, Sarah, and the rest of the family are up to as they navigate ever-changing technology in new decades.

There’s a great big, beautiful tomorrow on the way for Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. For the last 60 years, this passion project of Walt himself has served as a powerful reflection of optimism, innovation, and family over time.

Yet while the themes have always stayed the same, the most performed stage show in the history of American theater has taken several forms over the years. So, before we talk about what’s next for this beloved attraction, let’s take a look back at its evolution.

f23cf054-79cb-4bfd-a37f-b7f1661fcfb6.png

The Evolution of Carousel of Progress

To understand the full history of Carousel of Progress, you have to go all the way back to the 1950s. As Walt Disney set his sights on expanding Disneyland, he envisioned an extension of Main Street, U.S.A. called Edison Square.

The square would be anchored by Harnessing the Lightning, a walkthrough drama exploring how electricity and technology transformed the lifestyle of the American family. While Edison Square was never built, the groundwork was laid for a show centered on a powerful idea: technology would continue to evolve, but people would stay the same.

d0141021-e029-433a-aa0f-8b010efb8cc5.png

When work began on the Disney shows for the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair, Walt and his team of Imagineers reworked the Harnessing the Lightning concept into the smash hit of the Progressland pavilion — Carousel of Progress.

The fair marked the debut of the attraction’s iconic rotating theater system, as well as its equally iconic anthem by songwriters and Disney Legends Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman. It was an enormous success and a project deeply personal to Walt. It captured his overarching spirit of optimism while reflecting his hands-on creative direction, down to details as specific as how Uncle Orville’s toes should wiggle in the bathtub.

c8b3b8c3-8fcc-4973-8425-66195c923e83.png

Following its run at the fair, Walt brought the show to Disneyland, where it opened in 1967 with several updates, including a refreshed Act Four (now set in Progress City, a community of tomorrow based on Walt's vision for EPCOT). At the time, no one could have known that this finale would become a sign of things to come, as Carousel of Progress made its way to Walt Disney World in 1975.

In its time at Magic Kingdom, the attraction has continued to evolve, through new scripts, voice actors, time periods, and even full scene updates. The attraction even featured a new theme song, “The Best Time of Your Life,” which stood in for “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” for the attraction’s first two decades of operation in Florida. You can still hear the tune playing as background music throughout Tomorrowland today. The attraction’s last major update was back in 1993, which included an updated finale scene and the return of the original Sherman Brothers’ song.

Keeping Walt’s Vision Alive

Carousel of Progress was designed to celebrate change, not to stand still. As Imagineers, we now have the great responsibility of keeping Walt’s ideas of innovation and forward-looking spirit alive as we continue building the attraction’s future together. So where are we heading?

Guests may remember that last year we announced that guests will soon be able to see Walt Disney himself in the attraction, made possible through the magic of Audio-Animatronics technology. Walt is in a scene inspired by the 1964 special “Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair,” which is where he first introduced the idea of Carousel of Progress and shared his enduring belief in the power of progress to shape a better tomorrow.

The team is having a lot of fun sourcing and replicating many of the props seen in that special, like the prototype Tiki bird, the Tower of the Four Winds model, a doll from “it’s a small world,” and so much more.

This once unimaginable opening moment will set the stage for the next era of storytelling for our American family and their lovable dog.

New Decades Coming to Carousel of Progress

In addition to adding Walt Disney to the very attraction that bears his name, Imagineers will also be updating all the scenes to new time periods, where we’ll get to see what John, Sarah, and the rest of the family are up to as they navigate ever-changing technology in new decades.

One of our main goals for this update was to keep the attraction relatable for today’s audiences by featuring eras in which our guests have personal connections. Lots of our team grew up during these decades themselves, so it’s been a real trip down memory lane to revisit the music, fashion, technology and experiences that helped shape our history all reflected in this family’s story.

Act 1 – the 1960s

When the show first opened at the World’s Fair, its story began by looking back about 60 years to the dawn of the new century. Now more than six decades later, this new iteration mirrors that idea, starting 60 years back from today in the 1960s.

In the summer of 1969, our Carousel family, along with millions around the world, gather around the television to witness one of humanity’s greatest achievements: the historic moon landing. Filled with awe, the moment captures the spirit of innovation and possibility that has always been—and always will be—at the heart of Carousel of Progress.

Act 2 – the 1980s

It’s the ‘80s, where everything bigger is better, and things keep on getting bigger! We pick up with the family on Halloween Night of 1985, and for the first time ever, Sarah is taking center stage. She’ll share how all the new appliances and gadgets are making life easier for the whole family.

Speaking of John, we’ll find him out on the porch handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, and poor Uncle Orville can be found in the bathroom with “no privacy around here!”

Act 3 – The New Millennium

With the ‘90s drawing to a close, our Carousel family is preparing to ring in the new millennium on New Year’s Eve 1999. Amid the excitement of the countdown to 2000, a new thing called the Internet is bringing John, Sarah, Jimmy and Patty – and the world – closer together than ever before.

And, not everyone is making it to midnight. Grandpa has already nodded off before the big countdown, while Grandma sneaks the TV over to wrestling when no one’s looking.

Act 4 – The Possible Future

As we reach the end of our show, we see the family one last time in the distant future, in a home off planet. From a helpful robot assisting with everyday tasks to space travel, the scene imagines a future where extraordinary innovation has become part of life and proves that a beautiful tomorrow is just a dream away.

To help bring this new finale to life, Imagineers looked back at original concept sketches by Disney Legend John Hench, drawing inspiration from his imaginative vision of the future.

First Look at New Attraction Poster

We're also excited to share a first look at our new attraction poster that pays homage to the original Carousel of Progress poster created for its Magic Kingdom debut. Just like the attraction itself, the design reflects both where we’ve been and where we’re going.

When Will These Changes Happen?

To prepare for the next version of this ever-progressing attraction, the Carousel of Progress will be temporarily unavailable beginning July 6, 2026. We expect the attraction to reopen in 2027.

We can’t wait to share more of the incredible work the team is doing in the coming months as we carry on Walt’s vision, introducing the showto an entirely new generation of fans while honoring its history and heart. We could not be more optimistic about the beautiful tomorrow on the way!

Tips for Disneyland in the Summer

Explore at a Relaxed Pace with Multi-Day Vacations

Consider planning a multi-day Disneyland vacation of three days or more, which provides time to explore the resort at a relaxed pace and take breaks in between.

The Hotels of the Disneyland Resort are just steps away from the theme parks, making it convenient to take breaks in the room (or go for a swim at the pool!) when staying on property.

Stay Cool at Disneyland Resort This Summer

"Drop on in" Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Disneyland or venture through the wild waters of Grizzly River Run in California Adventure.

Both Disneyland and California Adventure offer a number of indoor, air-conditioned attractions. Locate them in the Disneyland app by selecting the “Indoor” filter on the map. Some of my favorites are “Walt Disney – A Magical Life” at Disneyland and Mickey’s PhilharMagic at California Adventure.

Another great location for an indoor break, the Tomorrowland Theater in Disneyland will play Pixar short films for a limited time beginning May 22.

Bring a reusable water bottle and fill up throughout the day at complimentary bottle-filling stations. A map of bottle-filling stations can be viewed on Disneyland.com.

Schedule meals and snack times in the afternoon, when temperatures may be warmer. Many table-service and quick-service restaurants across the resort offer indoor seating, including Golden Horseshoe at Disneyland, Lamplight Lounge at California Adventure, and Goofy’s Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel. Advanced reservations are highly recommended for table-service restaurants.

Save Time with Lightning Lane Access

With the purchase of Lighting Lane passes, guests can save time waiting in the standby line and instead join a shorter line for select attractions. Visit Disneyland.com for information about the different Lightning Lane passes available for purchase.

Guests checked in and staying at one of the Disneyland Resort hotels can take advantage of one complimentary Lightning Lane entry per registered guest to an available Lightning Lane Multi Pass attraction during their resort stay. More information is available on Disneyland.com.

Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank, California, is a place of pure magic – artists go in… beloved characters and films come out. Now, imagine stepping inside those iconic walls and seeing Disney Animation characters leap off the screen and into our world.

That was the heart and premise of the Emmy Award-winning short film, “Once Upon A Studio,” and soon, it will inspire a brand-new experience at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Housed in a building reminiscent of the iconic Roy E. Disney Animation Building, this upcoming family experience, “The Magic of Disney Animation,” is getting ready to bring the wonder of animation to life like never before.

Join The Fun at Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!

Starting May 26, the Clubhouse is calling and you’re on the guest list! Inspired by Disney Jr.’s hit series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+, this live show turns into a feel-good celebration where you don’t just watch the fun… you help make it happen.

Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse are ready to kick off the big bash, but when their friends are nowhere to be found, the party turns into a playful search mission. With music leading the way, you’ll clap, cheer, and dance along as the adventure unfolds — and before you know it, Goofy, Daisy Duck, and Pluto join in to bring the Clubhouse celebration to life.

New Adventures Under the Sorcerer Hat

In 2026, the current home of Star Wars: Launch Bay will transform into a place where kids and kids at heart can laugh, draw, dream, and explore animated new experiences. Topping the building will be Mickey’s iconic Sorcerer Hat (just like the real building in California!), which will cast a spell with pixie dust.

Our story in this newly reimagined space begins as the animators have temporarily stepped away… but the building is still buzzing with activity as the characters have come to life and they’re ready to play!

Inside, guests will interact with and explore silly takes on the iconic Disney Animation headquarters, including the many different studio departments. Only this time, some of our favorite pals have taken over to create the fun adventures.

The playful and interactive moments will be around every corner. See portraits come to life before your eyes just like they did in “Once Upon A Studio", find inspiration with a short film (with a twist, of course) and even pencil in some time to learn how to draw their very own character sketch.

Our youngest animators-to-be can explore the “Drawn to Wonderland” playground filled with an oversized flower garden with musical instruments, a Mad Tea Party playset and a Tulgey Wood exploration area, all inspired by the original “Alice in Wonderland” concept art from Disney Legend Mary Blair. It’ll be the perfect whimsical indoor play area for little ones to grow “curiouser and curiouser!”

All of those places to explore and create, and we haven’t even talked about character greetings… and there are lots! The whole family will be drawn to all the creative ways to play together when “The Magic of Disney Animation” opens at Disney’s Hollywood Studios next year.

The Walt Disney Studios Lot Comes to Life at Hollywood Studios

The pixie dusting from the Sorcerer’s Hat will extend far beyond the walls of “The Magic of Disney Animation” as the entire courtyard is reimagined into “The Walt Disney Studios,” taking inspiration from several buildings found in Burbank. This special nod to the legendary Walt Disney Studios Lot includes our version of the Studio Theater, which will continue to house “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure,” and over at the soundstage, you’ll find a fresh Disney Jr. show.

While exploring the studio grounds and courtyard area, families can take a break to play, relax, or snack on tasty treats under lush trees. And make sure to look around, too. You never know who you might see playing in the branches, soaking up the sun, or digging in the grass.

Explore “Off the Page!” and Spot Favorite Friends

Guests will also be able to venture into “Off the Page!” – a stunning area where they can meet some of their favorite friends from Walt Disney Animation Studios stories while celebrating the artistry behind every frame.

Each space offers incredible photo opportunities with favorite characters. Guests can meet Mulan in the Story department, posing in front of an oversized storyboard panel. Or step into the Layout department where Rapunzel waits in a setting inspired by the classic multiplane camera where guests will see layers of backgrounds and painted cells come together like magic.

Together, these spaces highlight key stages of the animation process, each brought to life through character encounters. Some of characters guests may spot are:

  • Mulan in Story
  • Rapunzel in Layout
  • Chip n’ Dale in Hand-Drawn Animation
  • Donald and Daisy in CG Animation
  • Goofy in Lighting
  • Stitch in Effects

Every corner of “Off the Page!” is designed to immerse guests in the craft of animation, as this experience is a collaboration between Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney Animation Studios. Dan Abraham, Walt Disney Animation Studios Director and co-director of the Once Upon a Studio short, says he can’t wait to see what guests dream up after visiting the space.

“It’s so cool because you’re waiting in line to have fun with the characters… and you’re getting to see a bit of history of the studio as well,” Abraham said. “It could very well inspire people to move our studio into the future when they [join Walt Disney Animation Studios] and carry on this legacy that has meant so much to so many people.”

Learn to Draw with Olaf!

Step into a new Animation Academy experience with Olaf Draws!, where everyone’s favorite snowman takes center stage as a cheerful host. With his signature warmth, optimism, and playful humor, Olaf invites guests of all ages to explore the art of character drawing.

Brought to life as an all-new Audio-Animatronics figure, Olaf welcomes guests into a space inspired by one of his most memorable moments from Once Upon A Studio sitting at an animator’s desk, joyfully discovering the art of drawing.

Stepping into a reimagined animator’s studio with playful nods to Frozen, guests of all ages are invited to sit down and learn to draw. Young animators in the making can spark their creativity at sleigh‑themed tables, while animator‑desk–style workstations invite kids at heart to feel as though they’ve stepped right into the studio.

The happy snowman’s spirit of curiosity and encouragement is what inspired Josh Gad, the voice of Olaf, as he recorded original dialogue for the experience while also considering what it might spark in young artists.

“I’m so thrilled that a whole new generation of kids can dream of becoming animators one day and can actually begin their journey right there on the studio lot,” Gad shared, underscoring how Olaf Draws! turns imagination into possibility.

Since Olaf can’t quite draw on his own, he turns to the expertise of some legendary Disney Animation artists whose pre-recorded guidance brings the class to life. Together, they guide guests step-by-step through the creative process, sharing tips, techniques, and stories straight from the studio as they learn how beloved Disney Animation characters come to life.

Each class features a different character, inspired by timeless classics and modern favorites, giving guests a unique reason to return again and again. They may find themselves sketching:

  • Mickey Mouse, with Dan Abraham, director (Once Upon A StudioBaymax!)
  • Minnie Mouse, with Hyun Min Lee, animator (Frozen 2The Princess and the Frog)
  • Donald Duck, with Austin Traylor, animator (Once Upon A StudioMoana 2)
  • Genie, with Eric Goldberg, animator (AladdinHercules)
  • Moana, with Samantha Vilfort, story artist (EncantoZootopia 2)
  • Stitch, with Fawn Veerasunthorn, director and head of story (WishRaya and the Last Dragon)
  • Olaf, with Trent Correy, director (Once Upon A StudioFrozen 3)
  • Ursula, with Michael Woodside, animator (Big Hero 6Encanto)
  • Judy Hopps & Nick Wilde, with Byron Howard director, (ZootopiaZootopia 2)

Where Art Springs to Life

As guests explore The Magic of Disney Animation, guests will discover an enchanted art gallery, a beautifully curated space filled with artwork featuring beloved Disney Animation characters. At first glance, it feels like a traditional gallery, but with a little pixie dust a favorite character may spring to life in all-new animations created exclusively for this experience!

From there, the journey continues in the Once Upon A Studio Theater, where guests can enjoy the Emmy Award-winning short film Once Upon A Studio. Inside this dedicated theater honoring more than a century of Disney Animation storytelling, enhanced effects add an extra layer of magic.

As guests enjoy the film, they may spot characters popping up within the artwork along the theater walls, placing them right in the middle of this enchanting story.

Disney Animation artists and Walt Disney Imagineers are working hand-in-hand to bring the wonder and nostalgia of Disney Animation films to the whole courtyard in new and immersive ways families will love. We can’t wait for guests to experience this fantastical place in late summer 2026.

As we prepare for this transformation, Animation Courtyard and Disney Jr. Play and Dance! will close beginning September 25, 2025. During this time, guests will still be able to go under the sea with Ariel in “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” and enjoy the exhibits and film presentation at Walt Disney Presents.

And guests can catch the inspiration for this brand new adventure – Disney Animation’s Once Upon a Studio – on Disney+.

Look Here: Muppet Easter Eggs and Nods at Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster If you thought Rock ’n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets was just a high-speed thrill, think again. The volume is being turned waaaay way up for Muppet fans (and for fans of going zero to 60 in 3 seconds) as guests race across town to the biggest, loudest, most psychedelic The Electric Mayhem concert of their life. But, my groovy friends, it’s not just about the destination… It’s also about the journey to get there.

The reimagined G-Force Records building at the end of Sunset Boulevard is less like a line and more like backstage access to The Muppets’ greatest hits. From the moment guests step into G-Force Records (now under the new management of Muppet real estate tycoon, J.P. Grosse), they’re surrounded by Muppets memorabilia, props, visual gags, and more — and of course, The Muppets themselves.

Here’s a VIP look at some of the Easter eggs fans will find along the way to the concert.

Blink-and-you’ll-miss-it references are layered with Muppet nods at every turn, showing the care and dedication that Walt Disney Imagineering put into curating everything. And yes, many items from Muppet*Vision 3D have made it inside,

Here’s a VIP look at some of the Easter eggs fans will find along the way to the concert.

Gallery Case Room

Upon entering G-Force Records, guests are treated to an in-progress gallery case, lovingly curated by Yolanda the Rat.

  • moi-focused tribute to Miss Piggy featuring one of her iconic looks, a pink and green polka dot dress with a matching hat.
  • The Muppets Studios recently donated Kermit’s original banjo, of “The Rainbow Connection” fame, to the Walt Disney Archives. While the original banjo is safely tucked away, Imagineers recreated it for display.
  • And it wouldn’t be G-Force Records without a nod to those who rock the loudest, The Electric Mayhem. Both Floyd and Janice’s guitars on display are originals from The Muppet Show.

The Alley

With VIP passes, head out into the alley where a rockin’ L.I.M.O. (Lengthy Immediate Motion Object) awaits. Along the way, be sure to stop and take in the sights (and dozens of easter eggs).

7e75ae5e-4519-45a3-a71e-c8c77ee4e9e3.png

  • Guests will find not one, but multiple props transported from Muppet*Vision 3D, including some of the shipping crates from the building. And for those who are fans of cranky old geezers, Statler and Wardolf’s chairs from the theater balcony are also inside.
  • Always one to dance to the beat of his own drum, Gonzo started a new adventure, Gonzo’s Stunt School – Hollywood. “The Great Gonzo” banner from the pre-show is nestled nearby, along with his stunt airplane.
  • And when it’s time to shoot Gonzo out of a cannon, he’s got the one from Muppet*Vision that the penguins used to aim at Swedish Chef.
  • For those looking for the dough, pizza boxes from the Hollywood institution PizzeRizzo are nearby.
  • Bonus! The Mona Lisa from Mama Melrose has also found its way to the alley.
  • Across the alley, The Squeakeasy shows that it was established in 1936, the same year that Jim Henson was born. There are also nearby fliers suggesting that someone has lost a bunny, because Bean Bunny ran away. There’s also laundry strung up outside the fire escape, featuring Fozzie’s bowtie, a PizzeRizzo apron, and a tour shirt for The Electric Mayhem.
  • One of the biggest easter eggs, literally, is the “blast off” billboard advertising Pop Off. Fozzie once hid his Studebaker here in The Muppet Movie.

Muppet Labs Parking Garage

Bunsen and Beaker have been busy working in the Muppet Labs Automotive Division, so of course, they have some vehicles lying around.

90751f90-1d3d-49f6-a441-3a41d9ebcf29.png

  • For those in need of a fast, small ride, the Interpol Car from Muppets Most Wanted has found a home in the parking garage.
  • And if fans really want to take Muppets Labs on the road, the fan-favorite Muppet Mobile Labs, which has been spotted in both EPCOT, Disney California Adventure, and Hong Kong Disneyland, is situated nearby.

On the Hollywood 101 Freeway

Guests' ride has arrived in style. When they're not scream-singing the lyrics to the rockin’ music onboard, they should keep their eyes peeled for the Muppet sights.

125c5863-3887-4007-b593-780a0bdc6f58.png

  • Whiz past World Wide Studios, the world-famous movie studio seen in The Muppet Movie.
  • Is that…is that Rat Pizza? Yes, it is. The PizzeRizzo sign has found a new home alongside the 101.
  • Guests might also spot a Waldo crossing, a loving nod to the Spirit of 3D.

Backstage at the Concert

Rock on!

f3743fe3-c75b-4d71-bdf4-e0da84a18f6f.png

  • As guests coast to a stop, there are two people who refuse to rock on: Statler and Waldorf from Muppet*Vision 3D!
  • Another thing brought over is the tribute to Jim Henson that used to hang in the rafters in the pre-show. Now, the portrait of Jim Henson as a Muppet hangs over the edit end of the ride.

Enjoy a rockin’, rollin’, totally groovalicious ride with The Muppets!
