Our Masai Giraffe Herd Just Got Cuter

June 11, 2026

Our Masai giraffe calf Ivy, born in April, has made her savanna debut and can be seen by guests on Kilimanjaro Safaris alongside her mom, Willow!

Already weighing nearly 300 pounds and standing about 7½ feet tall, Ivy is growing quickly and showing off her curious personality as she observes the herd and explores her surroundings.

May 1, 2026

It’s a girl! Earlier this month, a female Masai giraffe calf was born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, arriving at approximately 120 pounds and standing nearly six feet tall. Her mom, Willow, has been right by her side helping her curious calf get the hang of life as they bond and settle in together.

While she may be small now (by giraffe standards!), her arrival is a big moment for her species. Masai giraffes are classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with an estimated 30,000 remaining worldwide.

Through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, Disney works with experts to help care for giraffes and support a healthy population for generations to come.

Behind the scenes at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the animal care team is keeping a close eye on her growth and milestones. “She’s already had her first checkup and is doing great, so mom is happily in charge,” said Bri, an animal keeper at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. “Right now, she’s rarely far from her side, following her around the barn, exploring her surroundings and learning something new every day.”

For now, the calf is spending time backstage with mom Willow, but before long, guests will be able to spot her stretching her long legs on Kilimanjaro Safaris as she joins the rest of the herd this summer, including fan favorite Tucker (her half‑brother!) who was born in 2025.

More New Arrivals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

And our newest giraffe calf isn’t the only one stealing hearts this spring. Over at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, several other baby animals have arrived, and they’re already making a big impression. A male nyala calf named Parker is settling into his new home.

Nyala calves are born with white stripes and spots that help them blend into tall grass, and as he grows, Parker will develop a darker coat and the iconic spiral horns that make male nyalas so distinctive.

Icon Fun Fact
  • Male and female nyalas look completely different, making them one of the savanna’s most unique antelope species.

“We’ve been welcoming new baby animals to the lodge since its opening more than 25 years ago, so our team knows exactly how to prepare them for life on the savanna — from gradual introductions to space and sounds to watching how they respond to mom and their new environments,” said Mel, an animal keeper at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. “Even with all that experience, no two arrivals are ever the same.”

You may already recognize these little ones. Red river hog piglets Mason, Cooper, and Phillip, born to mom Clementine, plus Demi, who was born shortly after to mom Persimmon, are starting to explore their savanna habitat at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. They’re already full of personality as they stick close to their moms and discover their new home.

And last but certainly not least, Mabel, the first Ankole calf born at Walt Disney World in more than 20 years, is thriving under the care of Disney’s expert animal care team. Though she’s small now, Mabel will one day grow the striking, sweeping horns that make Ankole cattle such an unforgettable sight.

Bringing Conservation to Life for Guests

While these young animals are currently spending time backstage — bonding with their mothers, growing stronger, and receiving round-the-clock care — it won’t be long before they make their debut on the savannas at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge this summer. Spotting a young animal exploring its habitat creates unforgettable moments for guests and sparks curiosity, connection, and appreciation for wildlife.

These exciting milestones reflect Disney’s ongoing commitment to conservation around the world through the Disney Conservation Fund. Since 1995, the Disney Conservation Fund has directed more than $141 million to community conservation programs to support organizations working with communities to protect wildlife, inspire action, and promote environmental resilience.

Thanks to the passion and expertise of cast members, these newest arrivals help bring conservation stories to life for guests every day — and we can’t wait for you to meet them.

To see more of the work our teams do to care for more than 5,000 animals across Walt Disney World, be sure to follow along on Instagram and Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment on Facebook.

Steel rises behind the walls, new details emerge almost daily, and with every milestone, the world of Disney and Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. is roaring to life. Through a creative collaboration between Walt Disney Imagineering and Pixar Animation Studios, guests will finally be able to take in all the monstrous sights, tastes and sounds of Sulley and Mike’s world.

But this isn’t just a new land taking shape, it’s the beginning of a new story.

Monstropolis — the monster city now powered by laughter — is getting ready to give humans a glimpse of what’s been hidden from their world for generations. Which raises an interesting question: if humans were never meant to enter the monster world … why are the doors finally opening to us?

As it turns out, the answer is already making headlines in the city of Monstropolis. Through the pages of the Monstropolis Horn, the city’s official newspaper, monsters are talking about a “historic decision” that’s about to seriously mix things up for monster kind.

A Laugh That Changed It All

For generations, Monstropolis ran on fear, and not just because the monsters used screams to power their society: monsters were scared of us, too! Humans were seen as dangerous, toxic, and completely off-limits. I mean, who could forget the decontamination protocols for a 2319?!

When James P. Sullivan and Mike Wazowski (with one eye) discovered that human laughter generates far more power than screams, it didn’t just transform the energy crisis, it transformed Monstropolis itself. Fear gave way to curiosity. Caution gave way to connection. And for the first time, the doors separating the monster world from ours no longer felt like barriers.

What started as a breakthrough inside Monsters, Inc. quickly became something much bigger: a citywide shift in how monsters viewed humans. Scales fell from their eyes – well, at least for the monsters with scales to shed.

Enter: The Department of Human Relations

As Monstropolis evolved, so did its connection with the human world. Guesgts may have heard of the HR department, but they haven’t heard of this HR department … that’s right, we're talking about the Department of Human Relations. This new team established by the city has been tasked with sinking their teeth – and in some cases, their very BIG teeth – into helping monsters better understand humans as welcomed guests.

The newly instated department has been spearheading a moment that was once thought impossible: inviting humans into Monstropolis for the very first time. And that invitation has a name.

H.U.M.A.N. Day: A Celebration with a Purpose

H.U.M.A.N. Day, short for “Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice,” marks a historic milestone for the city. Part celebration, part cultural exchange, the event is designed to introduce humans to life inside Monstropolis while helping monsters discover that humans are not so frightening after all. Now that’s something to snarl – ahem, smile about!

Human guests will have the chance to explore the city, meet its citizens, taste unique cuisine, and step into the everyday world of monsters in a totally new way. For the first time, two worlds once separated are meeting face to scaly, furry, and fang-filled face – brought together not by screams, but by laughter.

Exploring the Streets of Monstropolis

As more of Monstropolis comes into view, one thing is clear: move over, cities of the human world! Monstropolis is going to be the next big vacation destination!

Storefronts line the streets, industries hum alongside everyday life, and every corner reflects the quirky, character-filled world fans fell in love with. And of course, it wouldn’t be Monstropolis without a few iconic stops along the way. Places like Harryhausen’s — yes, THAT legendary restaurant monsters line up for — and the Glob Theater help bring the city to life, adding even more personality, energy, and can’t-miss moments around every corner.

There’s still plenty more to uncover, so keep an eye or two (or six or eight!) on Disney Travel News for more details as Monstropolis gets ready to roll out the welcome mat on H.U.M.A.N. Day.
